Who it is for

A purposeful place to explore and grow.

Participants ready to plan and build a realistic freshwater ecosystem with guided lessons in design, planting, cycling and ongoing care.

What you can explore

Program details

Activities and projects are shaped around participant interests, current availability and the selected session format.

01

Design and hardscape

Choose from various tank sizes, wood types, mountain stone, river rock and substrate combinations to plan depth, flow and focal points.

02

Live planting

Select compatible freshwater plants, learn placement and planting techniques, and understand nutrients, supplements and advanced lighting.

03

Cycling and filtration

Learn filtration, temperature control, water preparation and the cycling stage that establishes a safer biological ecosystem.

04

Acclimation and maintenance

Prepare to take the project home, acclimate suitable fish after cycling and maintain the aquascape with the right tools and routines.

Introduction to Freshwater Aquascaping

Dry build | No livestock

Parent & participant lesson bookletDownload the complete program guide (PDF)

Participants combine art, design and freshwater ecosystem awareness in a dry, no-livestock project. They identify aquascape zones, compare safe and unsuitable materials, sketch a composition, build a stable hardscape and sequence the safe water-preparation steps required before any future livestock.

Highlighted learning objectives

  1. Identify substrate, hardscape, foreground, midground, background and negative space.
  2. Distinguish aquarium-safe materials from sharp, metallic, painted, unidentified or otherwise unsuitable items.
  3. Plan a composition with a clear focal point using an island, triangular or concave layout.
  4. Construct a stable dry freshwater hardscape while preserving maintenance access.
  5. Explain the water-preparation sequence and the rule that aquarium plants, animals, water and fragments must never be released into nature.

Experience arc

  1. Find focal points, foregrounds, backgrounds and negative space.
  2. Sort aquarium-safe and unsuitable materials using labelled examples.
  3. Sketch and construct a stable dry hardscape with maintenance access.
  4. Sequence conditioning, filtration, fishless cycling and water testing.

Learning outcomes you may observe

  • Identify a focal point and key aquascape zones.
  • Name an unsuitable material and explain or indicate a safer choice.
  • Complete a stable dry layout with maintenance access and an intentional planting plan.
  • Place the safe water-care steps in order and explain the never-release rule.
Four-week pathway
  1. Composition & safe materials
  2. Plants & planting plan
  3. Water preparation
  4. Maintenance & showcase

Safe participation: Projects remain dry and contain no livestock. Staff handle glass, heavy rock, water, electrical equipment and treatments. Aquarium plants, animals, fragments and water are never released into nature.
