Introduction to Music Production

Beat Builders

Parent & participant lesson bookletDownload the complete program guide (PDF)

Beat Builders introduces the core layers of a digital track in a welcoming, hands-on session. Using a prepared digital audio workstation, participants identify drum sounds, build a four-beat rhythm, add one musical layer and arrange a participant-created eight-bar track. This is recreational music education, not therapy or clinical assessment.

Highlighted learning objectives

  1. Recognize the kick, snare or clap, hi-hat and a melodic or musical layer.
  2. Copy and create a basic four-beat rhythm using body percussion, a pad or controller, or a visual beat grid.
  3. Use introductory DAW controls to play, stop, place, mute, undo and save sounds.
  4. Arrange an eight-bar track with a beginning, fuller section, break or change, and ending.
  5. Describe one creative decision and one safe-listening practice.

Experience arc

  1. Listen and identify kick, snare, hi-hat and musical layers.
  2. Echo and invent a four-beat rhythm with a preferred input method.
  3. Build a loop, add a musical layer and arrange an eight-bar track.
  4. Balance levels, save privately and share a short section only by choice.

Learning outcomes you may observe

  • Identify one or more sound layers in a track.
  • Create or reproduce a four-beat rhythm.
  • Demonstrate a clear arrangement change within an eight-bar track.
  • Name the Start Quiet rule, show a safe volume choice and explain one creative decision.
Four-week pathway
  1. Rhythm & groove
  2. Musical layers
  3. Arrangement & optional recording
  4. Mixing & private showcase

Safe participation: Start quiet, provide participant-controlled breaks, secure equipment, use generic project codes and obtain consent before recording or sharing names, faces, voices or work.
